Forward Sounds Foundation
Creativity. Community. Connection.
We’re an artist-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Brooklyn, championing music, dance, poetry, and the performing arts. Since 2001, we’ve supported artists, educators, and students—through residencies, festivals, and our podcast—all free and open to the public.
Our Mission
We unite communities through the power of art. We empower artists at every stage, providing the tools, mentorship, and platforms they need to share their creativity and inspire others.
Why It Matters
Creativity belongs to everyone. By reimagining how art is made, shared, and experienced, we spark personal growth, learning, and social impact.
What We Stand For
Explore – Curiosity, experimentation, and risk-taking drive everything we do.
Include – We amplify diverse voices and experiences, ensuring everyone can participate.
Connect – Through collaboration and community engagement, we foster meaningful connections that inspire dialogue, belonging, and shared creativity.

Our Story
It all began in 2001 when Federico Ughi arrived in New York from Italy and met legendary musician Daniel Carter. Together, they hosted house concerts in Brooklyn, sharing underground music with passionate audiences. From those first shows, Forward Sounds grew into a vibrant community that continues to push creative boundaries.
In 2015, we launched the New York Forward Festival to celebrate Daniel Carter’s 70th birthday and introduced Sounds of Freedom, our residency program giving musicians space to develop their unique voices.
Since 2025, all our programs have come together under the nonprofit umbrella of Forward Sounds Foundation.
